What this covers

A lightning protection system only works if it's installed correctly and kept in good condition — and that condition has to be provable, not assumed. We install, test and maintain lightning protection systems to BS EN 62305, and every job leaves you with a documented record showing exactly what was found and what was done.

Once a system is installed, it needs lightning protection testing at least once a year to remain compliant and to keep conducting a strike safely to earth. We carry out lightning conductor testing and inspection on churches, heritage sites, industrial structures and commercial buildings across a wide range of building types and access challenges.

Surge protection goes hand in hand with lightning protection — an external LPS safely conducts a direct strike to earth, but surge protection devices (SPDs) are what protect the electrical systems, equipment and wiring inside the building from the indirect voltage spikes a nearby or direct strike can cause. We supply, install and test SPDs as a core part of the same job, not as an afterthought.

How much does lightning protection testing cost?

Cost depends on the size and complexity of the system and how it's accessed — a straightforward annual test on a single structure costs far less than a full system replacement. Get in touch with your building details for an accurate quote.

Do I need a lightning protection system on my building?

It depends on the building's height, location, use and risk assessment under BS EN 62305. Churches, industrial structures and taller commercial buildings are the most common candidates. We can carry out a risk assessment if you're not sure.

How often does lightning protection need testing?

BS EN 62305 requires most systems to be tested at least annually, with more frequent inspection for higher-risk structures.

Do I need surge protection as well as lightning protection?

Yes, in most cases — the two work together rather than as alternatives. An external LPS handles a direct strike, but surge protection devices (SPDs) protect the electrical systems and equipment inside the building from the voltage spikes a strike can cause, even indirectly. BS EN 62305 risk assessments typically identify where SPDs are needed alongside the physical LPS.
